This photograph was taken in the early evening in September. Near Cognashene
in the Thirty Thousand Islands of Georgian Bay, part of Lake Huron which is one
of the Great Lakes of North America, there is a wonderful little marsh full of
frogs, turtles and endangered wildflowers.
I was in a canoe with a fellow artist, taking reference photos
for the upcoming winter of creating new paintings, when I noticed
this wonderful purple lilypad, and the gorgeous reflections
in the water.
We manoeuvred the canoe close enough to take the picture,
but every time we breathed or shifted, it would send out ripples
that disturbed the peaceful shimmer of the water.
Finally, I had my friend jam his paddle into the bottom of
the pond to brace the canoe. I called out, “STOP BREATHING!!”
For just a moment - just long enough - all was still as I
slowly
squ-e-e-e-e-zed the shutter to get the shot. With an
explosion of released breath, we unstuck the paddle and went
back to the cabin for a good dinner, happy with a job well done.
