The Precambrian Shield has been called "the bones of the
earth". Some of the oldest rock in the world, it
underlies the entire Georgian Bay region. The stone is
scored and marked with aeons of erosion from vegetation, glaciation,
water and wind-blown sand. The typical Georgian Bay White
Pine grows from splits and niches in the rock, a precarious
existence, buffetted and sculpted into fantastic shapes by
the constant westerly wind.
