When I was a child, it was a common practice to rake
the autumn leaves to the curb and burn them. One
of the joys of the season was to play hide and go seek
in the leaves, completely covering yourself
with them, in hope that your friends wouldn’t find you. There was
always the delicious sense of danger, wondering if you’d be found before
your parents came to set fire to the pile.
One of my fondest memories is looking
upwards through the leaves at the sunlight peeking through. The smell of burning
leaves in autumn still evokes a strong sense of nostalgia, half a century later.
